soundproofing a garage

creating a completely soundproof room is almost impossible, especially when it is made out of tin like a garage. blocking out treble (high frequencies, like a guitar amp or cymbals) is not very hard but blocking out bass frequencies (bass amps and kick drums) is much harder.

the first steps to soundproof our garage have been taken. it is now empty and soon extra framework will be built. this is to help build "a room inside a room" which is one of the most effective ways to soundproof. eventually, the garage will be an anti-sound jam/recording/chill room.

soundproofing consists of packing many layers of sound absorbing materials against each other, but with no hard, sound travelling materials, such as concrete, touching each other. this means that the floor (which is concrete) needs layers of rubber and cannot touch any other hard objects.

the walls of the room will consist of multiple layers gyprock fake wood, rubber and thick pieces of wood. the floor however, will be first, as building the "walls" of the room on top of the original concrete floor and then building the new floor around it will result in sound leakage through tiny gaps and vibrations in the concrete.

  4. Howdy Louis,
Progress is looking good! I'm sure with some careful planning and hard work you'll end up with a space you can jam in almost any time AND stay friends with the neighbours...
All the best with it, mate. Look forward to hearing about how it progresses.
